In
today’s presentation we’d like to show you how families lived 100
years ago in comparison to families today.
If
there are any questions you’d like to ask, please leave them until
the end, when we’ll do our best to answer them.
Now
we want to continue with explaining how families are living at in
present.
Nowadays
it is normal to get non, one or two children. Just a few get more.
100 years ago five or more children were formerly quite normal for an
average family; this is now almost rare or special. Today, there are
usually no more than two kids, this proves an Austrian study. An
average family in Austria gets no more than 1,2 children.
The
basic difference between the past and present families, the so-called
hierarchy. The head of the family is no longer the father. In the
modern family is the mother the boss. She manages the money, usually
goes to work, cares for children and also makes the household. The
woman is no longer dependent on the man and goes to work herself,
that’s the reason why there are more and more divorces.
Deutsche Familie vor 100 Jahren auf dem Land mit fünf Kindern.
In
the last 100 years, the family has changed. In contrast to today,
there was formerly a large family. In large families the
grandparents, aunts and uncles, parents and children lived in a
household. Today there are mainly just Nuclear-, Patchwork-, Foster
and sometimes large families.
It
is also normal that two men or women adopt children. In the past it
was impossible
100
years ago women got 5 to 10 children or more, but many children died
in child age. On average, people got only 47 years old.
Earlier, the father had all the
important decisions and the task to raise the money. The mother was a
housewife and had as most support the oldest daughter. On the success
of the children weighed hope of the parents, the son should get the
best possible college degree. The daughters, however, were brought to
downright housewives, only a low level of education were allowed so
they could marry as early as possible and can manage her future
husband a nice home.
Most
families in cities lived in tenements or in workers' settlements. The
apartments were small, but there lived large families in it. At the
country the people lived from farming and almost all the work was
done by the people themselves or by draft animals. They needed the
children for the work at home. Nearly all children had to work. They
did deliveries of goods or helped in factories. They brought the
workers in the mine water and food. Often they still had to work in a
factory as adults.
In
the 20th century the whole family lived in one house and helped
together as much as they could. But if a child didn’t obey they
often had to kneel on a piece of wood or got proposals.
One parent often earns too less money, so the
second has to go to work too, to earn some money. Therefore, occur
that children are cared for and educated of other people as
Grandparents, child-minders or larger siblings. It is observe that
children in the worst case afternoons must supply alone.
Often
the children don't have a caregiver, because of lack of time. But
children also have problems. They need a person they trust, who they
can turn to. But children also need rules too. Many only children are
spoilt so they get everything they want.
As
more and more men and women decide for the career and against
children, there are fewer and fewer families. It has become very
difficult at the present to support a family, because the living
costs are always growing.
Many
partners decide to get children later. So they get their first child
with 35 and so they may think that they are too old and won’t get a
second. But there are also other problems in our world. In China for
example, a woman is just allowed to get one child, although she wants
a second one. Some Chinese parents also have to send their only child
to work to get some money, because they are so poor.
Population
Development
In
the following diagram we want to show you the evolution of our
population in Austria.
The
population was always growing until the World War I, because there
died a lot of people and there was less money and so the woman didn’t
get many children. When the World War ended, the population grew
again. Then the World War II came and there died lots of people
again. In the 1950 the conservation pill was invented. So there
weren’t born so many babies. Until 2005 the population was growing,
but now the line is sinking again.
